The session on Architecture as a Culture was a refreshing discussion on the Srilankan architecture and its relationship with natural and cultural landscapes. Featuring the architect pioneers Vijitha Yapa and Palinda Kannangara, the session was moderated by Meena T Pillai.
According to Palinda, every building says one culture and there is an identity for certain buildings associated with the social structure. The culture that has evolved based on certain architecture is least pondered upon. The dialogue threw light on the colonial invasions that influenced architecture. Rethinking the norms of architecture post the deluge was discussed by the trio. The concepts of designs catering to the tropical climate needs, by rethinking about the traditional labels for living spaces was also under focus.
It ended on a positive note that architecture could be considered a gender neutral space.
