Out of Places -II
The symbols, icons and memories that define us as a people are being assailed. Our memories lose their colour and definition, assaulted by wave after unaesthetic wave of brutal images. The icons from which we drew our strength now appear before us unrecognizable, characters from stories that seem to have turned on their head. The institutions in which we invested our future have atrophied from with in, and have become empty shells incapable of action. Symbols and ideals that guided and chastised us turn and pose themselves as logos for manipulated projects.
Amidst these erasures and fractures, its time to call up new acts of the imagination. It is the imagination that will help us retrieve, reclaim, recall and recover. That which is erased can be drawn back, that which is removed can be redeemed, that which is obscured can be brought to light. Art can be this occasion of remembering and returning our symbols and songs and words and forms, It can become for us an archival tool for resistance, a survival kit for the imagination.
